The dream of super fast internet no longer belongs to just the average teenaged gamer. Executives, marketers and even stay at home moms feel the pressure to connect at high speed. Those extra few seconds of upload time set everyone on edge.

So there’s good news from BT if you’re praying for the internet fairy to sprinkle your house with super sonic speed. In the past, BT said it could provide FTTP access to only about 1 million homes. FTTP means “fiber to the premises” and is the fastest type of optical fiber connection for broadband. (Primarily because of costs.)

Now BT says it can reach 2.5 million homes, and provide another 9 million with FTTC (fiber to the curb, close but not as fast as directly connected to your home/office). BT plans on using existing ducts and cables to make this a reality. They promise faster internet by 2012.

Of course there is competition for BT, but the new fibers and high speed of up to 100 Megabytes per seconds does sound pretty dreamy. More on BT’s high speed happenings here.

So you know you want broadband internet, but what exactly is broadband internet? Well it stands for any kind of high speed internet really, so DSL and cable are just types of broadband. Broadband means that the amount of information you can receive is higher, and relates directly to the speed of data transmission. The term “bandwidth” applies to how fast that data transmission might be (per second).

There’s a lot more information on broadband internet that you can find on wikipedia, if you need something to pass your time.

What does a faster internet connection mean to you or your company?
