The next charity spotlight I wanted to do is a local example, here in Texas: The North Texas Food Bank. This food bank isn't worldwide and it isn't particularly famous but it is utilizing online resources and standing out in its community.

First take NTFB's website. Often charities have a hard time raising funds, which is understandable so when they just put up a website it has no search engine optimization and is ugly to look at. NTFB has a site with bright, happy colors, at least a moderate attention to design detail and decent coding. It may have cost them a little extra, but a good site will be easier to find, understand and get connected through.

NTFB also does a great job with their message. They've certainly spent time marketing their brand. The gold and green logo is noticeable in the area around town. Also, one of their campaigns has been: $1 makes 4 meals. This image is striking and is something we can hold-on to and really see how our money is being put to work.

Finally, NTFB has stepped out in the social media world. They have an active Twitter account, a Facebook Profile, a MySpace Page and even a Wordpress Blog. Their twitter account seems particularly impressive to me, as they not only post information but interact with followers and actively ask for help/donations.

These are all lessons that other charities and even businesses can learn from: website with some thought behind it, great message people can grasp and an interactive social media presence.

Would you like to help this fantastic organization? Feel free to donate directly or check out my friend Suzanne Hoenig's blog post where she challenges people to "be the change". Get involved with Suzanne to make your own donation and further hers.

Is there an impactful charity in your community that deserves a spotlight?
