The Magic of Control

Not everyone can be a programmer. And even if you do understand basic programming, its probably not enough to create a really great online presence for your business. Instead you pay someone to create a site for you.

Of course, the problem then becomes about control. You have a website but with little-to-no control over what goes on it. If you need changes, edits, whatever, you have to call your webmaster and ask him to change things. This can take time or even money. Its not simple and you can’t do it yourself.

Enter the CMS. CMS stands for Content Management System. It means that you can log-in and have access to every page on your website without worrying about code. You can edit or change text, even images and pages (with the right platform). Suddenly control returns to your hands. No waiting on someone else, if you want to fix your website, you can do it yourself.

My favorite platform is WordPress. WordPress is actually a blogging platform but it can be used as a CMS as well. If you’ve ever blogged with WordPress, using it to manage your website requires very little training. It works much the same way. You can edit your text, add photos or video and even download plug-ins to make the site more interactive. What I suggest to companies who want control, is to find a developer who works in wordpress, get them to custom build a site for you and then manage it yourself.

Control is a magical thing. It can be freeing to know you don’t have to depend on anyone else; that you can edit and change your website as your company grows. And watching what you write suddenly appear on your site (for the world to see!) can be a fantastically fulfilling experience.
