We all know that every transaction, every email, every little piece of information is stored somewhere. Normally we don't spend a whole lot of time thinking about it. It may cross our mind as we swipe a credit card but for the most part we just go along our merry way.
Even I hadn't thought about it until I stumbled upon a recent article at BBC. The article spends quite a bit of time talking about how Iceland is trying to move in on the server market. They hope to host a huge amount of the world's servers and boost their economy.
If you know anything about servers, you know that they are very sensitive to temperatures; particularly heat. Servers need to be kept in a cool, dry place (and sometimes it costs quite a bit to keep them at a decent temperature). It may not matter so much for your small business, one server kept in a closet, but for big business, even medium ones that store a lot of data (like banks) can need a serious amount of space.
Iceland just happens to have the best possible climate for a server. With their year round cool temperatures they are ideal. Its also quite a bit cheaper.
Now there's certainly something to be said for being able to physically touch your server; especially if you run a small operation. But a large company could cut quite a bit of their costs by moving their servers to Iceland. Not only that but moving to Iceland could save on energy (and therefore the environment, because I know we all like green-friendly energy).
It will be interesting to see if Iceland's technology vision pans out. Iceland could become the data center for the entire world!
Thoughts on servers? Would you move yours to Iceland?
